Each kit contains five each of the following plants. They are sold as plugs, young plants with well-developed root systems. They will establish quickly once planted.

Turtlehead (Chelone glabra):

-Upright perennial with stout stems and shiny deep green leaves.  In late summer and fall, stems are topped by lovely clusters of white or pink snapdragon-like flowers.  The individual blooms are about an inch long and are elongated with 2 lips.  The unique flower shape resembles the head of a turtle.  Floral displays begin in late summer and continue into autumn.

-Thrives in sunny moist or boggy sites or in frequently irrigated gardens.

-Plants grow 2-3’ tall with 2’ spread.

-Fairly unpalatable to deer and other mammals.

Blue flag (Iris versicolor):

-A vigorous perennial that grows best in sites with moist or wet acidic soil high in organic matter. Plants produce clumps of distinctive narrow pointed leaves. In spring, foliage is topped by lovely blue irises. The sword-shaped leaves are up to 30” tall and 1-2” wide. Leaves overlap at the base and fold around the adjacent leaf to form a flat fan-like arrangement. In spring leafless flower stalks bear 3-5 blue-purple or violet flowers.  Each bloom is 3-4” wide with darker purple veins.

-This unique wildflower sparkles in full sun or part shade.

-Plants are 2-3’ tall with a 2-3’ spread.

-Deer resistant.

Swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata):

-Upright elegant plant with slender willow-like leaves.  In summer plants are topped by rounded pink or rose-colored flower clusters, which attract flocks of butterflies.

-Plants thrive in sunny sites with moist or saturated soils.

-Plants have narrow lance-shaped leaves with pointed tips and smooth margins.  Stems and leaves contain a milky sap that exudes when plants are damaged.  Desirable yellow and black Monarch caterpillars feed on the foliage. Cinnamon-scented summer umbels are composed of many tiny star shaped florets. Monarch, red admiral, American lady, painted lady, swallowtail, fritillary, and hairstreak butterflies, along with bumblebees, honeybees, hummingbird moths, and hummingbirds seek the floral nectar.

-Not palatable to deer, rabbits and other herbivores.
